An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings lists the former Shaw cable network, now owned by Rogers, in Alberta cities such as Airdrie, St. Albert and Medicine Hat. Grande Prairie is different: the only cable network owner that map lists in the city is Eastlink. Alongside it are Telus and a fibre and wireless network owner based in Grande Prairie. Here’s how Grande Prairie is wired, and what Boom TV needs to run smoothly on your connection.
The centre of the Peace River region
Grande Prairie lies about 456 km northwest of Edmonton and serves as the business and transportation centre of Alberta’s Peace River region. It became a city in 1958 and had 64,141 people at the 2021 census.
Bear Creek runs through the city, and Muskoseepi Park, whose name means Bear Creek in Cree, follows its valley. Northwestern Polytechnic sits in the northwest of the city. All around Grande Prairie is the County of Grande Prairie No. 1.
Eastlink owns the cable network
That map divides Grande Prairie into 14 zones. Eastlink is the only cable owner listed, mapped in eight of them. Eastlink is headquartered in Halifax and began in Amherst, Nova Scotia, in 1969. If you’ve moved here from another Alberta city, check which cable network serves your new address.
Neither Rogers nor Shaw appears as a cable owner in Grande Prairie on that map. Rogers is listed for wireless only.
Telus: fibre in some zones, DSL in more
The same map shows Telus fibre-to-the-home in nine of the 14 zones, and Telus DSL, which runs over older copper phone lines, in 12. So being a Telus customer doesn’t tell you which technology you’re on. If streaming feels slower than your plan suggests, ask Telus what actually serves your address.
A fibre network owner from Grande Prairie
The map also lists GPNetworks as a fibre owner in half of the city’s zones, and as a fixed-wireless owner in all of them. Federal grant records give the company’s location as Grande Prairie. Under the Universal Broadband Fund, it has a fibre project to improve high-speed internet access for 394 households in Evergreen Park, Webster and Grovedale, running from January 2025 to March 2027.
The map counts network owners only, so a reseller may sell you service over one of these lines under its own name.
Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial. Boom TV is an app you install and sign into, nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
If a fast connection still buffers, the cause can be inside the house:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz. It’s faster, and less crowded in apartment buildings and attached homes.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
- Count everyone else on the network. Downloads and video calls share the same connection as your TV.
