New Westminster is small on the map, about 15.6 square kilometres on the Fraser River, but it has a busy fibre map and a fibre network the City itself owns. The 2021 census counted 78,916 people here, up 11.2% in five years. If you’re choosing a connection for streaming live TV, that means more options than you might expect, especially in an apartment or condo. Here’s how New Westminster’s connections break down, and what Boom TV needs to run well on yours.

BC’s first incorporated city

New Westminster was founded in 1858 as the capital of the Colony of British Columbia, a role it kept until 1866, when Victoria became the capital. Incorporated in 1860, it was the first city in British Columbia to be incorporated with an elected municipal government.

The city sits mainly on the north bank of the Fraser. Queensborough is the exception: it’s on the eastern tip of Lulu Island, next to Richmond. A home in Queensborough and a tower near downtown are both in New Westminster, so check what reaches your own address.

The City’s own fibre network

New Westminster runs its own open-access fibre network, called BridgeNet, which launched in 2016. The City doesn’t sell internet over it directly. Instead, partner internet providers sell service over the City’s fibre.

BridgeNet’s own website has an address check, so you can see whether your building is connected. Ask your building manager or check with the providers. Boom TV runs the same way over it as over any other connection.

Who owns the wires in New Westminster

Two big networks reach across the city:

  • Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, so the former Shaw network is now owned by Rogers.
  • Telus, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL.

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings splits New Westminster into four zones. It lists the cable network, Telus fibre and Telus DSL in all four. It also lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in all four, so ask Rogers which technology serves your address.

Six fibre owners in four zones

That coverage map lists six companies as fibre-to-the-home owners in New Westminster. Besides Telus and the former Shaw network, they are:

  • Novus, a Vancouver-based company that runs fibre into apartment and condo buildings across Metro Vancouver, listed in 3 of the 4 zones.
  • Urban Fiber, also listed in 3.
  • Beanfield, listed in 2, and CIK Telecom, listed in 1.

Boom TV works on all of them. Nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps, so if you’re on DSL, run an evening speed test before counting on 4K. In a tower, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz, run Ethernet to the main TV if you can, and keep the router out of cabinets.
