Richmond Hill has more than the usual two wired networks to choose from. On top of Rogers and Bell, a newer local fibre network has been under construction here since 2024. Your connection is what decides how well live TV plays, so it’s worth knowing what reaches your street. Richmond Hill had 202,022 people in the 2021 census. Here’s how its connections break down, what streaming actually needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own line first.

A city by name since 2019

Richmond Hill was a town until 2019, when council voted seven to two to call it a city. According to the City, the change in status didn’t change its roles or responsibilities. It’s still a lower-tier municipality within York Region.

Its old downtown is the stretch of Yonge Street between Major Mackenzie and Richmond Heights. North of downtown is the community of Oak Ridges, which became part of Richmond Hill in 1971, and the northern part of the city sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine.

Richmond Hill’s population was 195,022 in 2016 and 202,022 in 2021. Neighbourhoods built at different times can be on different technology, so a friend’s connection across the city tells you about their line, not yours.

Rogers, Bell, and a lot of fibre

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Richmond Hill into 10 zones:

  • Rogers is the only cable network owner listed, mapped in every zone, and Rogers fibre is mapped in 9 of 10.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in every zone, alongside Bell’s older DSL.
  • telMAX fibre is mapped in about 4 of 10 zones.
  • Other fibre owners, including FibreStream, Beanfield, Dotto and CIK, each appear in a smaller share.

Those are shares of mapped zones, not homes, and with only 10 zones the map is coarse. Check your own address before you choose. York Region also owns YorkNet, a dark fibre network that internet providers can use, but your home service still comes through a provider.

The local fibre build

In April 2024, telMAX started building a privately funded fibre network in Richmond Hill. The company and the City held the groundbreaking together. By December 2025, telMAX listed Richmond Hill among the communities it currently serves. Coverage depends on the street, so if fibre from a smaller provider interests you, ask whether your address is connected yet.

For streaming, any of these networks works. Boom TV is an app, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

For Richmond Hill, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, well beyond a few streams. Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so on DSL, test your speed before counting on 4K or several screens.

Test on the device in the room with the TV, in the evening, when home internet is busiest. Then add up your screens: two HD streams and one 4K stream need about 45 Mbps together.

Fixing buffering at home

When a fast connection still stutters, the cause is usually inside the house:

  • Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz. It’s faster and less crowded, especially in townhouse rows and apartment buildings.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if the router is close enough.
  • Get the router out of the basement or the cabinet, or add a mesh point for upstairs rooms.
  • Restart the streaming device now and then. Small sticks run better after a fresh start.
  • Count everyone on the network. Video calls, game downloads and cloud backups share the same connection as your TV.
