Saint John sits on the Bay of Fundy, where the Saint John River squeezes through a narrow gorge and the tides push it backwards at the Reversing Falls. The 2021 census counted 69,895 people here, spread over about 316 square kilometres. For streaming live TV, it helps to know that the wired networks don’t show up in every part of the city’s map. Here’s how home internet works across Saint John, and what Boom TV needs to run well on your connection.

Canada’s oldest incorporated city

Saint John was established by royal charter on 18 May 1785, making it the first incorporated city in what is now Canada.

The city has grown since then. On 1 January 1967, Lancaster, on the west side of the river, was amalgamated with the City of Saint John, and its former area is now the Saint John West neighbourhood. So a home on the west side and one in the uptown core are both in Saint John, but they may not have the same options. Check what reaches your own address.

Who owns the wires in Saint John

Two big networks serve the city:

  • Rogers, which owns the cable (coaxial) network and is also listed as a fibre owner.
  • Bell, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL.

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings splits Saint John into 28 zones. It lists:

  • Rogers cable in 23 of 28 zones.
  • Bell fibre in 23 of 28, and Bell DSL in 23.
  • Rogers fibre in 16 of 28.

These are shares of mapped zones, not of homes. They don’t tell you which streets have what, but they do show that the wired networks aren’t listed in every mapped zone. Look up your own address with the providers.

Boom TV runs over any of these networks. It’s an app you install and sign into. Nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

Where the wires stop: wireless and satellite

That coverage map lists fixed wireless in almost every zone, from Xplore in 27 of 28, Rogers in 25 and Bell in 18, and satellite from Xplore in all 28. It lists fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps and DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps, so results vary from line to line.

Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial, in the evening, in the room with the TV.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

If a fast connection still buffers, look inside the house:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz for the TV.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
  • Count everyone else on the network. Downloads and video calls share the same connection.
