Winnipeg’s internet has been rebuilt and renamed in the last few years. MTS, Manitoba’s long-time phone company, has been Bell MTS since 2017, and in 2020 it announced a plan to rewire the city with fibre. The cable network that was Shaw’s has belonged to Rogers since April 2023. And since 1972 “Winnipeg” has meant a dozen former municipalities joined into one city. Here’s what that means for streaming TV at your address, and how to check your own line with a free 24-hour trial of Boom TV.

Bell MTS and Rogers: Winnipeg’s two wired networks

For home internet over a wire, Winnipeg has two main networks.

  • Bell MTS. BCE bought Manitoba Telecom Services in March 2017, and the company now operates as Bell MTS. In March 2020 it announced a project to bring fibre to about 275,000 Winnipeg homes and businesses. Fibre tends to hold its speed well in the evening.
  • Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023 and has been moving Shaw customers onto the Rogers brand. In Winnipeg, Rogers runs fibre to the neighbourhood and coaxial cable into the home, and says fibre-to-the-home plans will appear where it becomes available.

Either network handles live TV comfortably on a reasonable plan. Boom TV is an app, so it installs nothing on your Bell MTS or Rogers line and changes nothing on your account. What matters is the speed that actually reaches your TV.

One city since 1972, and it still shows

On 1 January 1972 the City of Winnipeg merged with its surrounding municipalities, including St. Boniface, St. Vital, Fort Garry, St. James-Assiniboia, Transcona, Charleswood, Tuxedo and the Kildonans. Winnipeggers called it Unicity. Many of those old names are still in everyday use as neighbourhood names, and the areas inside them were built over different decades.

Not everyone stayed. Headingley, on the western side, was part of Winnipeg after 1972, held a referendum on leaving in 1991, and is now its own rural municipality again. Past the Perimeter Highway, the communities around the city are separate municipalities, and wired internet there can be less complete than in the city itself.

What that means for streaming:

  • Your neighbourhood’s age affects your line. A newer development, an older street and a rural lot outside the Perimeter can all be on different technology, even with the same provider.
  • Don’t go by someone else’s experience. If it works for a friend in Transcona, that tells you about Transcona’s wiring, not yours.
  • Outside the Perimeter, test first. Wired internet can be more limited there, so check your connection at the times you watch.

Fibre or cable: does it matter for TV?

Not as much as you might think. A TV stream mostly flows one way, down to your screen, and both Bell MTS fibre and the Rogers network carry far more than one or two streams need. Fibre plans usually offer much faster upload speeds than cable, and fibre tends to hold its speed well in the evening. The faster upload matters when someone else in the house is on video calls or uploading files.

If you’re moving to a new Winnipeg address and choosing a provider, ask about evening performance and what technology serves that exact unit, not just the top advertised speed. If you’re already connected and happy with your internet, you very likely don’t need to change anything to stream TV.

What your Winnipeg connection needs

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
A second screen at the same time add the same again

Most current home internet plans clear those with room to spare. When streaming struggles, the bottleneck is usually inside the house:

  • Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz. It’s faster and less congested, especially in apartment blocks and close-set houses.
  • Wire the main TV with Ethernet if it’s anywhere near the router.
  • Get the router out of the basement corner. Move the router or add a wired access point closer to the TV.
  • Check for competing traffic like downloads, backups and video calls when you’re testing.

Winnipeg IPTV: frequently asked questions

Does Boom TV work on Bell MTS fibre? Yes. Boom TV runs over your internet connection, and Bell MTS fibre is a strong base for it. Nothing is installed on the line.

I was a Shaw customer. Is that a problem? No. Shaw is now part of Rogers, and the network is the same. Boom TV works on it like any other connection.

Will it work in St. Vital, Transcona or outside the Perimeter? Anywhere your connection delivers about 10 Mbps per HD stream, or 25 Mbps for 4K. Most current plans in the city clear that. Outside the Perimeter, try the free trial on your own line first.

What causes buffering in winter evenings? Usually the home network rather than the weather: everyone is home and online, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi gets crowded. Switch to 5 GHz or plug the TV in with Ethernet.

Can I test it before I pay? Yes. Start the free 24-hour trial, then choose a plan from the shop.
