Airdrie grew fast. At the 2021 census it had 74,100 people, up 20.3% from 61,581 five years earlier. Its wired internet comes over two networks: a cable network that was built by Shaw and now belongs to Rogers, and a Telus network that carries fibre in some parts of the city and older DSL in others. Here’s how Airdrie is wired, and what Boom TV needs to run smoothly on your connection.
From a railway stop on Nose Creek to a city
Airdrie began as a railway stop next to Nose Creek, where steam locomotives could take on water. It became a village in 1909, a town in 1974 and a city on 1 January 1985.
Today it sits north of Calgary, on Highway 2 in the corridor between Calgary and Edmonton. It’s part of the Calgary census metropolitan area, and the city is surrounded by Rocky View County.
When a friend across town tells you how their internet behaves, that’s their line, not yours. What matters is which network reaches your own address.
Cable: the network that used to be Shaw’s
Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, so the former Shaw network is now owned by Rogers.
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings divides Airdrie into eight zones. It lists this cable network, under both the Shaw and Rogers names, in five of them. The former Shaw network is also listed as a fibre owner in three of the eight zones.
The map counts network owners only, so a reseller may sell you service over one of these lines under its own name.
Telus: fibre in some zones, DSL in others
In February 2019, Telus announced a plan to connect more than 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Airdrie directly to its fibre-optic network, with construction starting that spring. It said it expected to connect the majority of homes and businesses by the end of 2020. That was a plan at the time, so check what serves your own address rather than assuming.
That coverage map now shows Telus fibre in five of Airdrie’s eight zones, and Telus DSL, which runs over older copper phone lines, in four. So being a Telus customer doesn’t tell you which technology you’re on. If streaming feels slower than your plan suggests, ask Telus what actually serves your address.
The map also lists fixed wireless in every zone, from Xplore, Telus and Rogers, plus AireNet in half of them, and satellite from Xplore across the city.

How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
If a fast connection still buffers, the cause can be inside the house:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz. It’s faster, and less crowded in apartment buildings and attached homes.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
- Count everyone else on the network. Downloads and video calls share the same connection as your TV.
