Lethbridge is a city divided by a river. The Oldman River runs between West Lethbridge and the north and south sides, and home internet here is divided too: a cable network that belonged to Shaw and now belongs to Rogers, and a Telus network that carries fibre in some parts of the city and older DSL in others. The City also owns a fibre network of its own, though the expansion funded in 2021 was aimed at the Sherring and Churchill industrial parks. Here’s how Lethbridge is wired, and what Boom TV needs to run smoothly on your connection.
North, south and west of the river
Lethbridge had 98,406 people at the 2021 census. The city is split into three areas. The north side was first settled by coal mine workers, and it’s where the industrial parks are. The south side holds downtown and most of the shops. West Lethbridge, across the Oldman River from the other two, is the newest and the largest.
When a friend on the other side of the river tells you how their internet behaves, that’s their line, not yours. What matters is which network reaches your own address, and what’s wired into your home.
Rogers, formerly Shaw: the cable network
Rogers completed its takeover of Shaw on 3 April 2023. If you still see the Shaw name, it’s the same cable network, now owned by Rogers.
Rogers describes its Lethbridge network as fibre to the neighbourhood, with coaxial cable into the home.
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings shows this cable network in about two-thirds of the city’s mapped zones.
Telus: fibre in some zones, DSL in more
The same coverage map shows Telus fibre-to-the-home in a little over half of Lethbridge’s zones, and Telus DSL, which runs over older copper phone lines, in all but one of them. Shaw, now Rogers, is also listed as a fibre owner in a smaller share of the zones.
So being a Telus customer doesn’t tell you which of the two technologies you’re on. If streaming feels slower than your plan suggests, ask Telus what is actually serving your address, not just what’s available in the area.
Boom TV runs on any of these connections. It’s an app you install and sign into. Nothing is installed on the line, and nothing changes on your Rogers or Telus account.
The City’s fibre is for the industrial parks
Lethbridge does have its own fibre-optic network, owned by the City. In 2021, government funding was announced to extend it, with a stated goal of improving broadband for businesses and organizations in the Sherring and Churchill industrial parks. The aim was to help attract and keep businesses there.
As announced, it was an industrial-park project, not a city-wide home service. Check which networks reach your own address.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
If a fast connection still buffers, the cause can be inside the house:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz. It’s faster, and less crowded in apartment buildings and attached homes.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
- Count everyone else on the network. Downloads and video calls share the same connection as your TV.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Rogers or Shaw internet in Lethbridge?
Yes. Shaw is now part of Rogers, and Boom TV runs over that cable network the same way it runs over Telus. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
I’m with Telus. Does it matter if I’m on fibre or DSL?
Boom TV works on both. What matters is the speed that reaches your TV in the evening. Check it against the table above, and ask Telus which technology serves your address.
Can I get home internet from the City’s fibre network?
The City’s 2021 fibre expansion was aimed at the Sherring and Churchill industrial parks, not the whole city. Check which networks reach your own address.
I live in West Lethbridge. Is anything different?
Boom TV works the same on every side of the river. What can differ is which network reaches your address, so use the free trial to test your own line.
What if I’m on fixed wireless or satellite?
That coverage map lists fixed wireless and satellite in every zone of the city. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. It lasts 24 hours and is free. Start the trial or see the plans.
