Beloeil sits on the west bank of the Richelieu River, 32 km east of Montreal, facing Mont-Saint-Hilaire across the water. Its home internet runs on two main networks: Vidéotron owns the cable network and Bell runs fibre and DSL, both mapped across the whole town. Here is what that means for streaming live TV, how much speed you need, and how to try Boom TV on your own connection first.
Two hamlets, four towns, one river
Belœil (the official spelling uses the œ) became a village in 1903 and a city in 1914. It grew as two separate hamlets, one around the Saint-Mathieu church and one around the railway station, and inland growth from the 1950s joined them into one town. Much of the old Belœil-Station area left in 1917 to become McMasterville.
Today Beloeil is part of a cluster of four towns on both sides of the Richelieu with more than 40,000 people between them. Only the river separates it from Mont-Saint-Hilaire and Otterburn Park, and Bernard-Pilon Street marks the line with McMasterville. The 2021 census counted 24,104 people in Beloeil itself, up 7.3% from 2016.
Vidéotron cable and Bell fibre across town
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Beloeil into five zones:
- Vidéotron is the only owner of a cable (coaxial) network, and it is mapped in every zone.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL are both mapped in every zone.
- Cogeco fibre appears in one zone of the five.
Rogers appears on that coverage map only for fixed wireless and mobile. The map counts network owners, not resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s or Bell’s lines. Five zones is a small sample, so check your own address.
Whichever line you have, Boom TV is an app. Nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test. It is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps depending on the line, so run a speed test in the evening before you rely on it for 4K or several screens.
A 4K TV in the living room plus an HD stream on a tablet needs about 35 Mbps between them.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
If a fast connection still stutters, the cause is often between the router and the TV:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or a closed cabinet, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
- Test in the evening, when everyone at home is online.
