Blainville is a North Shore city about 35 kilometres from Montreal, and its home internet is simple: Vidéotron’s cable network and Bell’s fibre and DSL network are both mapped across all of it. The main difference from Laval is how much fibre Vidéotron has here. Blainville had 59,819 people in the 2021 census. Here’s what its networks mean for streaming live TV, and how to check your own connection before you pay.
A town since 1968
Blainville’s land has a long history. It was part of a seigneury granted in 1683, and the city’s name honours Jean-Baptiste Céloron de Blainville, its third lord. But Blainville as a town of its own is much newer. It was created on 14 June 1968, when the parish of Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville was divided.
Today it’s part of the Thérèse-De Blainville Regional County Municipality in the Laurentides region. Between the 2016 and 2021 censuses its population grew from 56,863 to 59,819.
Two main networks, and more Vidéotron fibre than Laval
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Blainville into 7 zones. It shows:
- Vidéotron as the only cable (coaxial) owner, mapped in every zone.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL, both mapped in every zone.
- Vidéotron’s own fibre in 3 of the 7 zones, about 43%.
- TelKel, a smaller fibre operator, in 1 zone.
Compare that with Laval. On the same coverage map, Laval also has Vidéotron as its only cable owner and Bell fibre and DSL everywhere, but Vidéotron fibre shows up in only about one zone in ten. If you’ve moved up from Laval, the main networks are the same, and Vidéotron fibre is mapped in a larger share of zones.
The map leaves out resellers, so the brand on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s or Bell’s lines. With only 7 zones, these shares are rough, so check your own address.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test. It’s listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so run a speed test in the evening before you count on it for 4K or for two TVs at once.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
If a fast connection still stutters, the cause is often the last few metres:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Put the router somewhere central and off the floor. Basements and cabinets cost you signal, especially for TVs upstairs.
- Count everything else on the network. Video calls, game downloads and backups share the same connection as your TV.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Blainville?
Yes. Vidéotron is the only cable owner on the network-owner map for Blainville, and Boom TV runs over Vidéotron cable or fibre the same way it runs over Bell. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Can I get Rogers or Cogeco cable in Blainville?
Not according to the network-owner map. Vidéotron is the only cable owner listed. Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile service.
Is cable or fibre better for live TV?
Either is plenty. Cable is listed at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, while a 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps.
What speed do I need for 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. The trial is free and lasts 24 hours. Start the trial or see the plans.
