Saint-Jérôme sits on the Rivière du Nord, about 45 kilometres northwest of Montreal, and its home internet looks a lot like Laval’s: Vidéotron cable and Bell fibre are mapped across all of it. Look closer, though, and Saint-Jérôme has a few extra owners that Laval doesn’t. Here’s who wires the city, what live TV needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.

One city since 2002

Saint-Jérôme is in the Laurentides region and the La Rivière-du-Nord Regional County Municipality, and it’s the seat of the judicial district of Terrebonne. Today’s city took shape in 2002, when Saint-Jérôme was amalgamated with Bellefeuille, Saint-Antoine and Lafontaine.

The 2021 census counted 80,213 people, up 7.9% from 74,346 in 2016.

Those former municipalities are now one city, but merging town halls doesn’t merge wiring. Streets in old Saint-Jérôme and in the former Bellefeuille or Lafontaine can be on different technology, so check your own address rather than your neighbour’s.

Vidéotron and Bell everywhere, plus a few extra owners

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Saint-Jérôme into 10 zones. It shows:

  • Vidéotron cable (coaxial) in every zone.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL in every zone.
  • Cogeco cable in about one zone in five, and Cogeco fibre in the same share.
  • Vidéotron’s own fibre in about one zone in five.
  • A fibre network listed under MRC d’Argenteuil in about one zone in five.

That’s a busier map than Laval’s. On the same coverage map, Laval has Vidéotron as its only cable owner and no Cogeco at all. If you’ve just moved up from Laval or Montreal, you may find an extra option at your new address.

The map leaves out resellers, so the brand on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s, Bell’s or Cogeco’s lines. These are shares of mapped zones, not homes.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test: it’s listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so run a speed test in the evening before you count on 4K or several screens.

Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream on a tablet need about 35 Mbps between them.

When it buffers, look inside the house first

Streaming trouble on a fast connection often starts between the router and the TV:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. In apartment buildings and attached homes, the 2.4 GHz band is crowded with neighbours’ networks.
  • Run an Ethernet cable to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Get the router out of the basement or cabinet. Every floor and wall between it and the TV costs signal.
  • Test at the time you actually watch. A weeknight evening is the real test.

Frequently asked questions

Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Saint-Jérôme?

Yes. Vidéotron cable is mapped in every zone of Saint-Jérôme, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Bell or Cogeco. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

Is Cogeco available in Saint-Jérôme?

In part of the city. Cogeco cable and fibre are each mapped in about one zone in five. Check your own address.

I live in the former Bellefeuille or Lafontaine. Is anything different?

They’ve been part of Saint-Jérôme since 2002. Boom TV works the same anywhere in the city, but the technology wired to your street can differ, so test on your own connection.

What speed do I need for 4K?

About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The trial is free and lasts 24 hours. Start the trial or see the plans.
