Caledon is a town of 76,581 people (2021 census) spread over almost 689 square kilometres of Peel Region. It takes in Bolton, a string of villages and a lot of countryside, and the networks mapped there vary across the town. For streaming live TV, that line into your home matters more than anything else. Here’s who owns Caledon’s networks, what the Town has done about rural internet, what speed streaming needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.

One town, many communities

Caledon is the northernmost of Peel Region’s three municipalities. Its current shape dates from 1974, when a restructuring roughly tripled its land area. Caledon Township was joined with the villages of Bolton and Caledon East, Albion Township, and the part of Chinguacousy Township north of Mayfield Road.

Bolton is the main administrative and commercial centre. Caledon East and Mayfield West are rural service centres, and the villages include Alton, Belfountain, Caledon Village, Cheltenham, Inglewood, Mono Mills and Palgrave. The town grew 15.2% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.

Who owns the wires in Caledon

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Caledon into 39 zones. Here’s what it shows:

  • Rogers cable is mapped in 32 of the 39 zones, and Rogers fibre-to-the-home in 14.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in 25 zones, and Bell’s older DSL in all 39.
  • Vianet, an independent provider with its head office in Sudbury, is mapped as a fibre owner in 13 zones. Smaller fibre owners, including NFTC, Standard Broadband and Wightman, appear in a handful.
  • Fixed wireless from Bell and Rogers is mapped in every zone, with ten other fixed wireless owners in parts of the town, and satellite from Xplore everywhere.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, and in a town this size they cover a lot of open land. Check your own address.

Boom TV is an app you install and sign into, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

Caledon’s push for rural internet

The Town has put its own money into this. In its 2016 budget, Council set up a broadband levy on property tax bills, set aside for broadband infrastructure. In January 2021, Vianet began building fibre networks in north-east and central Caledon. In July 2023, the federal government and Rogers announced funding to complete broadband expansion in Caledon, with a target of reaching every household by the end of 2025. The Town ended the levy in its 2023 budget, saying it was no longer required.

That end-of-2025 date was a target. The Town’s page says it will share installation order and timelines as they become available, so if you’re on a rural road, ask providers what reaches your address today.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists Caledon’s cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps and fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps, so if you’re on either, test your speed before relying on 4K or several screens.

Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream on a tablet upstairs need about 35 Mbps between them.

Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.

When a fast connection still buffers

The cause is often inside the house:

  • Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Move the router out of the basement or utility room, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
  • Count everyone on the network. Video calls, game downloads and cloud backups share the same connection as your TV.
  • Test in the evening, in the room with the TV, when everyone at home is online.
