Cambridge is three towns that became one city in 1973: Galt, Preston and Hespeler. On the internet side, it’s simpler. Rogers owns the cable network, and both Bell and Rogers fibre are mapped in most of the city’s zones. Cambridge had 138,479 people in the 2021 census. Here’s what that means for streaming live TV, what Boom TV needs, and how to test it on your connection before you pay.
Galt, Preston and Hespeler became one city in 1973
Cambridge was formed in 1973 by amalgamating Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the settlement of Blair. The former Galt makes up the southern half of the city, and Hespeler is the northeastern section. The city sits where the Speed River meets the Grand.
Cambridge is one of three cities in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and it grew 6.6% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.
Rogers runs the cable, Bell and Rogers run the fibre
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Cambridge into 12 zones:
- Rogers is the only coaxial cable owner listed, mapped in about 92% of zones.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 92% of zones, and Bell’s DSL is listed in every zone.
- Rogers fibre is mapped in about 83% of zones.
- NFTC (North Frontenac Telephone Company), a smaller fibre builder that has also worked in the Region’s townships, appears in a quarter of zones.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes. Your own address is what counts, so check it with the provider. The map lists network owners only, so a reseller may sell you service over Rogers or Bell lines under its own name.
Coming from Hamilton? Expect a different cable company
Highway 8 links Cambridge to Hamilton in the east. Follow it and the cable company changes. On that coverage map, Cogeco is the only cable owner listed for Hamilton, while in Cambridge it’s Rogers, and Cogeco isn’t listed at all.
Nothing about Boom TV depends on which company owns the line. It’s an app, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable in Cambridge at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps. If you’re still on DSL, run a speed test in the evening before you count on 4K. A family watching a 4K stream downstairs and two HD streams upstairs needs about 45 Mbps in total.
Before you blame the connection
A fast plan can still stutter at the TV. Check these first:
- Pick the 5 GHz network on the TV or stick, not the 2.4 GHz one.
- Use a wired connection to the main TV if a cable run is practical.
- Get the router into the open. A router behind a TV cabinet or in a basement corner loses signal on the way to the room.
- Mind the rest of the household. Video calls, game updates and backups all share the line.
- Restart the streaming device from time to time.
Getting set up in Cambridge
- Start the free 24-hour trial. Test it in the evening, on the TV you actually use.
- Install the app on your streaming stick, TV box, smart TV, phone, tablet or computer, and sign in with the details sent by email.
- Connect over 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and watch a full evening. If it plays cleanly, choose a plan on the plans page.
No technician, no new wiring and nothing to return.
Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Rogers internet in Cambridge?
Yes. Rogers owns the cable network in Cambridge, and Boom TV runs over Rogers cable or fibre the same way it runs over Bell. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Is Cogeco available in Cambridge?
That coverage map doesn’t list Cogeco as a network owner in Cambridge. Cable here is Rogers.
Does it matter whether I’m in Galt, Preston or Hespeler?
Not for Boom TV. What matters is the speed you get in the room with the TV. Bell and Rogers fibre are both mapped in most of the city’s zones, but check your own address.
What do I need for 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K stream, plus a TV or device that supports 4K.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. It lasts 24 hours and is free. Start the trial or see the plans.
