Châteauguay sits on both the Châteauguay River and Lac Saint-Louis. It’s an off-island suburb of Montreal, but its home internet looks a lot like the city’s: Vidéotron owns the cable network, and Bell runs fibre and DSL. Châteauguay had 50,815 people in the 2021 census. Here’s who wires the city, what streaming live TV needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.
A village, two annexations, one city
The village of Châteauguay was created in 1855. The city grew by annexing two neighbouring districts, Châteauguay-Heights in 1968 and Châteauguay-Centre in 1975, and the current municipality was constituted on 3 November 1975.
Châteauguay is in the Montérégie region and has been part of the Roussillon Regional County Municipality since 1982. Lac Saint-Louis is a section of the St. Lawrence River. Between 2016 and 2021 its population grew 6.1%, from 47,906 to 50,815.
Those old district lines don’t decide your internet. What matters is the technology wired to your street and your building.
Vidéotron and Bell, plus a smaller fibre owner
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Châteauguay into 8 zones. It shows:
- Vidéotron as the only cable (coaxial) owner, mapped in every zone.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL, both mapped in every zone.
- A smaller fibre owner in 2 of the 8 zones, and Vidéotron’s own fibre in 1.
In the network-owner data, neither Rogers nor Cogeco owns a cable network here. Rogers appears for fixed wireless and mobile service.
On the same coverage map, the city of Montréal shows the same main pattern: Vidéotron as the only cable owner, with Bell fibre and DSL everywhere. If you’ve moved over from the island, your choice of main networks hasn’t changed.
The map leaves out resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s or Bell’s lines. These are shares of mapped zones, not homes.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test. It’s listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so run a speed test in the evening before you count on it for 4K or two TVs at once.
Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream on a tablet need about 35 Mbps between them.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
Streaming trouble on a fast connection often starts between the router and the TV:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Put the router somewhere central and off the floor. Basements and cabinets cost you signal.
- Test at the time you actually watch. A weeknight evening is the real test.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Châteauguay?
Yes. Vidéotron is the only cable owner on the network-owner map for Châteauguay, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Bell fibre or DSL. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Can I get Rogers or Cogeco cable in Châteauguay?
Not on the network-owner map. Vidéotron is the only cable owner listed here. Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile service, and Cogeco doesn’t appear.
Is cable or fibre better for live TV?
Either is plenty. Cable is listed at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, while a 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps.
What speed do I need for 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. The trial is free and lasts 24 hours. Start the trial or see the plans.
