Dollard-des-Ormeaux is the most populous suburb on the Island of Montreal, and English is the home language of a majority of its residents. Its home internet is easy to describe: Vidéotron owns the cable network and Bell runs fibre and DSL, the same pattern as the city of Montréal. Here’s what that means for streaming live TV, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.
In Montreal, then out again
Dollard-des-Ormeaux was founded in 1924 and became a city under a new charter on 4 February 1960. On 1 January 2002, it was merged into the city of Montreal as part of the Dollard-Des Ormeaux–Roxboro borough. After a 2004 referendum, it became an independent city again on 1 January 2006.
It’s still tied to its neighbour. Dollard-des-Ormeaux is a member of the urban agglomeration of Montreal, whose council handles shared services such as public transportation, public safety and water supply.
The 2021 census counted 48,403 residents. The city has been officially recognized as a bilingual municipality since November 2005, and in the 2021 census English was the home language of 54% of residents.
Vidéotron and Bell, the same as Montreal
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Dollard-des-Ormeaux into 4 zones. It shows:
- Vidéotron as the only cable (coaxial) owner, mapped in every zone.
- Bell as the only fibre-to-the-home owner, mapped in every zone, with Bell DSL in every zone too.
In the network-owner data, neither Rogers nor Cogeco owns a cable network here. Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile service.
That coverage map shows the same pattern for the city of Montréal, and for Kirkland: Vidéotron as the only cable owner, with Bell fibre and DSL.
If you’ve moved here from Pierrefonds or the Plateau, expect the same two main networks.
The map is small, only 4 zones, and leaves out resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s or Bell’s lines. Check your own address.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test. It’s listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so run a speed test in the evening before you count on it for 4K or for several screens.
Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the family room and an HD stream on a laptop need about 35 Mbps between them.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
If a fast connection still stutters, the cause is often the last few metres:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
- Run an Ethernet cable to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement. Every floor and wall between it and the TV costs signal.
- Count everything else on the network. Video calls, game downloads and backups share the same connection as your TV.
