Kawartha Lakes is a city the size of a county. It covers about 3,034 square kilometres of land, it is mostly rural, and it had 79,247 people in the 2021 census. For live TV over the internet, that matters more than anything else: a house in Lindsay and a rural road outside Bobcaygeon can be on completely different kinds of connection. Here’s how home internet works across Kawartha Lakes, what Boom TV needs, and how to test it on your own line first.

Victoria County became one city in 2001

On 1 January 2001, the former Victoria County and its constituent municipalities were amalgamated into a single municipality, the City of Kawartha Lakes. Before that, the county was made up of 13 townships and 6 incorporated communities. Today it is a single-tier municipality.

The largest community by far is Lindsay, with 22,367 people in 2021. Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Omemee and Woodville follow, with many smaller villages and rural roads in between. The Trent–Severn Waterway runs through the city, with locks at Bobcaygeon, Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Rosedale and Kirkfield.

Who owns the wires in Kawartha Lakes

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Kawartha Lakes into 162 zones. Because so much of the city is rural, the picture looks nothing like a typical town:

  • Cable of any kind is mapped in about 40% of zones. Five companies own cable lines here, led by Cable Cable and Rogers.
  • Fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 37% of zones, mostly Bell‘s, with several smaller fibre owners in a few zones each.
  • Bell DSL is mapped in about 73% of zones.
  • Fixed wireless is mapped in about 96% of zones, with several companies listed, and satellite in every zone.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, and much of the city is rural, so check your own address.

A cable company from Fenelon Falls

On that coverage map, the cable owner listed in the most zones isn’t one of the big national names. It’s Cable Cable, a company established in Fenelon Falls in 1983 that serves customers across the City of Kawartha Lakes. In September 2020, it had more than 6,000 residential and business customers when Rogers announced an agreement to acquire it, and local reporting the following year described Cable Cable as acquired by Rogers in 2020.

Whichever company runs your line, Boom TV works the same. It’s an app you install and sign into, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

For Kawartha Lakes, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps and satellite at 25 to 220 Mbps. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.

Test where and when you watch: on the device in the TV room, in the evening. A 4K TV and an HD stream on a tablet need about 35 Mbps between them.

If a fast connection still buffers, check inside the home first:

  • Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can.
  • Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
  • Count everyone on the network. Downloads and video calls share the same connection as your TV.
