Peterborough has a crowded internet map. On the network-owner map, Cogeco cable and Bell fibre both reach every part of the city, and a third fibre network, from a phone company that started in a nearby village in 1898, is mapped in most of it. Peterborough had 83,651 people in the 2021 census, and for live TV, the line into your home and the Wi-Fi inside it decide how well it plays. Here’s who wires the city, what Boom TV needs, and how to test it on your own connection first.
A city on the Otonabee, separate from its county
Peterborough is the seat of Peterborough County, but it is politically independent from it: the city runs as a single-tier municipality. It covers about 65 square kilometres of land, built on a series of rapids in the Otonabee River. The city completely surrounds Little Lake, the only lake on the Otonabee, and the Trent–Severn Waterway passes through town, including the Peterborough Lift Lock, which opened in 1904. The Hunter Street Bridge links East City with the downtown core.
It is also a college town. Trent University was established in 1964, and Fleming College, established in 1967, has its Sutherland Campus in the city. If you’re renting near either one, your building’s internet choices are worth checking before you move in.
Cogeco, Bell and a local fibre company
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Peterborough into 8 zones:
- Cogeco cable is mapped in all 8 zones, and Cogeco fibre in 7.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in all 8 zones, with Bell’s older DSL listed everywhere too.
- Nexicom fibre is mapped in 6 of the 8 zones.
- Eastlink cable appears in one zone.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address. The map counts network owners only.
Nexicom: a phone company from up the road
Nexicom’s history goes back to 1898, when it was founded as the Turner Telephone Company in the village of Millbrook. Millbrook is the main community in the Township of Cavan Monaghan, which lies about 20 kilometres southwest of Peterborough.
In nearby rural communities, Nexicom said in May 2022 that its fibre networks in Bridgenorth and Lakefield were complete, connecting more than 2,000 homes and 150 businesses, with more communities under construction. If you live just outside the city line, ask which of these networks reaches your road.
Boom TV works the same on all of them. It’s an app, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
For Peterborough, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, well above a few streams. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps and fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.
Test where and when you watch: on the device in the TV room, in the evening. A 4K TV and an HD stream on a tablet need about 35 Mbps between them.
When a fast connection still buffers
Check inside the home first:
- Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can.
- Keep the router out of basements and cabinets. Walls and floors cost signal.
- Count everyone on the network. In a shared student house, every roommate’s downloads and video calls share the same connection as your TV.
