Maple Ridge covers about 268 square kilometres between the Fraser River and the Golden Ears, and the 2021 census counted 90,990 people here, up 10.6% in five years. It’s a city with a downtown in Haney and a lot of land beyond it: the City says about 15% of Maple Ridge is in the Agricultural Land Reserve. For streaming live TV, that spread matters, because the wired networks aren’t listed everywhere. Here’s how Maple Ridge’s connections break down, and what Boom TV needs to run well on yours.

A district for 140 years, a city since 2014

Maple Ridge was incorporated as a district municipality in 1874 and became a city in 2014. Its neighbourhoods range from Haney, now the downtown, and Port Hammond to Albion, Silver Valley, Thornhill, Webster’s Corners, Ruskin, Whonnock and Yennadon.

According to the City, 3,782 hectares, or about 15% of the municipality, lies within the Agricultural Land Reserve. A townhouse near Haney and a house out past Webster’s Corners are both in Maple Ridge, but they may not have the same wired options. So check what reaches your own address rather than going by the city as a whole.

Who owns the wires in Maple Ridge

Two big networks serve the city:

  • Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, so the former Shaw network is now owned by Rogers.
  • Telus, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL.

Boom TV runs over any of them. Nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

What the network map shows: cable in 14 of 21 zones

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings splits Maple Ridge into 21 zones. Unlike in Vancouver, the wired networks don’t show up in every one:

  • Telus fibre is listed in 15 of 21 zones.
  • Cable (the former Shaw network, now Rogers) is listed in 14 of 21.
  • Telus DSL is listed in 12 of 21.
  • The former Shaw network is also listed as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 4 zones. Ask Rogers which technology serves your address.

The same map lists fixed wireless from Rogers in 15 zones and from Telus in 11, and satellite from Xplore in all 21. These are shares of mapped zones, not of homes. They don’t tell you which streets have what, so look up your own address with the providers, then test what you actually get.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps and fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps. If you’re on either one, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before counting on 4K or several screens at once. Clearing about 10 Mbps per screen makes HD realistic.

Streaming in a bigger house

On cable or fibre, the slow part is often inside the home:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz, for the TV.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if the router is close enough.
  • Move the router up and into the open. Basements, cabinets and the back of the TV all cost signal.
  • Consider a mesh system if the TV is several walls or a floor away from the router.

Frequently asked questions

Does Boom TV work on Rogers or Telus in Maple Ridge?

Yes. Boom TV runs over the former Shaw network, now Rogers, and over Telus fibre or DSL. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

I live on a rural road. Will it work?

It can, if your connection is fast enough. The wired networks aren’t listed in every Maple Ridge zone, so run an evening speed test and compare it with the table above. About 10 Mbps per screen is enough for HD.

I’m on fixed wireless or satellite. Is that enough?

Do I need new equipment?
