“Langley” is two municipalities, not one. The City of Langley had 28,963 people in the 2021 census. The Township of Langley, which surrounds most of it, had 132,603. They are separate municipalities with separate histories, so it helps to know which one you live in before you compare internet options. Here’s how home internet works across Langley, and what Boom TV needs to run well on your connection.

City or Township? It matters for your address

The City of Langley is small: about 10 km², next to Surrey on the west and surrounded elsewhere by the Township. It began as Langley Prairie, which seceded from the Township and became the City of Langley on 15 March 1955.

The Township of Langley is far larger, at about 307 km². It was incorporated in 1873 and takes in communities such as Fort Langley, Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Murrayville, Brookswood and Aldergrove. Its outer areas, particularly in the south and southeast, are still largely agricultural.

Both grew quickly: the City by 11.9% and the Township by 13.1% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses. When you check internet options, use your full street address, not just “Langley”.

Rogers and Telus across the Langley area

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) has a single “Langley” page split into 23 zones. It doesn’t say whether that means the City, the Township or both, so read its figures as the Langley area as a whole.

  • Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023. If you still see the Shaw name, it’s the same cable network, now owned by Rogers. That coverage map lists Rogers’ cable network in all 23 zones. Rogers’ Langley page describes fibre to the neighbourhood with coaxial cable into the home. The coverage map lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 10 of the 23 zones. So ask Rogers which technology actually serves your address.
  • Telus. That coverage map lists Telus fibre-to-the-home in 20 of the 23 zones and Telus DSL in all 23. Telus’s Langley page notes that its fibre is not available in all areas, and that it offers DSL to customers outside its fibre communities.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes.

A Township fibre build announced in 2024

On 16 July 2024, Telus announced that its fibre service would soon be available in the Township of Langley, and said residents could expect construction notices. It gave no completion date and no count of homes for the Township. If you’re in a rural part of the Township, ask Telus whether the build has reached your road yet.

Whichever line you end up on, Boom TV works the same. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, well beyond a few streams. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so if your address is on DSL, test before counting on 4K or several screens. A 4K TV and an HD tablet stream need about 35 Mbps between them.

When a fast plan still buffers

The cause can be inside the house:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Move the router out of the basement or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
  • Count everyone on the network. Video calls, downloads and backups share the same connection.
  • Test in the evening, in the room with the TV.

Getting set up in Langley

  1. Start the free 24-hour trial. Test it in the evening, on the TV you actually use.
  2. Install the app on a streaming stick, TV box, smart TV, phone, tablet or computer, and sign in with the details sent by email.
  3. Connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and watch a full evening. If it plays cleanly, choose a plan on the plans page.

No technician, no new wiring and nothing to return.

Frequently asked questions

Is the City of Langley the same as the Township?

No. They have been separate municipalities since 1955. The City is the small urban area; the Township surrounds most of it and includes Fort Langley, Walnut Grove, Willoughby and Aldergrove.

Does Boom TV work on Rogers internet in Langley?

Yes. Rogers has owned the former Shaw network since April 2023, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Telus. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

Is Telus fibre available at my Township address?

Telus announced a Township fibre build in July 2024 but gave no completion date, so check your own address with Telus. Boom TV runs on fibre, cable or DSL, as long as the speed is there.

What speed do I need for 4K?

About 25 Mbps per 4K stream, or about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. It lasts 24 hours and is free. Start the trial or compare plans.
