Newmarket is York Region’s seat, and it’s a compact town: 87,942 people in the 2021 census, on about 38.5 square kilometres of land. On the network-owner map, four companies’ fibre shows up in town. For streaming live TV, what matters is the line into your home and the Wi-Fi inside it. Here’s who owns Newmarket’s wired networks, what speed streaming needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.
The seat of York Region
Newmarket was incorporated as a village in 1857 and became a town in 1880. Today it’s the regional seat of York Region. Its southern boundary meets Aurora, and in 1971 it took in land from the old townships of East Gwillimbury, King and Whitchurch.
The East Holland River is the town’s main river. Newmarket’s population grew 4.4% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.
Rogers cable, and four fibre networks
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Newmarket into just 6 zones, because the town is small. Here’s what it shows:
- Rogers cable is mapped in all 6 zones, and Rogers fibre-to-the-home in 4.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in all 6 zones, with Bell’s older DSL listed in all of them too.
- telMAX, a GTA-based fibre company, is mapped in 5 of the 6 zones. In September 2026 it listed Newmarket among the communities its network spans.
- Vianet, an independent provider with its head office in Sudbury that runs its own fibre and wireless networks, is mapped as a fibre owner in 4 zones.
- Fixed wireless from several companies, and satellite from Xplore, are mapped in every zone.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, and the map counts network owners only. Check your own address.
Boom TV is an app you install and sign into, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
The Region’s fibre company has its office here
York Region owns a fibre company too. YorkNet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Region, building a dark fibre network across York. For homes, it works with a partner, Galaxy Fibre, to connect eligible homes in “fibrehoods”, which it describes as neighbourhoods that have been equipped with fibre infrastructure.
YorkNet’s mailing address is on Yonge Street in Newmarket. Newmarket itself isn’t on its current list of connected communities or its list of upcoming fibrehoods, so for addresses in town, the networks on the map above are the ones to compare.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists Newmarket’s cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far more than a few streams need. Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so if you’re on DSL, test your speed before relying on 4K.
Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream on a tablet upstairs need about 35 Mbps between them.
Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.
When a fast connection still buffers
The cause is often inside the house:
- Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or utility room, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
- Count everyone on the network. Video calls, game downloads and cloud backups share the same connection as your TV.
- Restart the streaming device now and then. Small sticks with limited memory can run better after a fresh start.
- Test in the evening, in the room with the TV, when everyone at home is online.
