“North Vancouver” is really two places. The City of North Vancouver is a compact municipality of about 12 square kilometres, and the 2021 census counted 58,120 people there. The District of North Vancouver is a separate municipality that surrounds the City on three sides, covers about 161 square kilometres and counted 88,168 people. The City sits across Burrard Inlet from Vancouver. For streaming TV, the difference matters, because a home near Lonsdale and a home high on the mountain slopes may not have the same connection options. Here’s how it breaks down, and what Boom TV needs to run well on yours.
The City and the District are separate municipalities
The District of North Vancouver was incorporated in 1891. The City of North Vancouver was incorporated in 1907, and it is surrounded on three sides by the District. Lonsdale is the City’s downtown centre.
The District is much larger. Its neighbourhood centres include Upper Lonsdale, Lynn Valley, Main Street, Parkgate and Deep Cove. Its land climbs from sea level to 1,449 metres, with rugged terrain and steep, winding roads.
On this page, every fact says which one it means. If a source doesn’t say, we tell you.
Who owns the wires in North Vancouver
Two big networks serve North Vancouver:
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, so the former Shaw network is now owned by Rogers.
- Telus, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL.
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings maps a “North Vancouver” area in 14 zones. It doesn’t say whether that means the City, the District or both, so treat these as figures for the mapped area as a whole:
- Telus fibre is listed in 10 of 14 zones, and Telus DSL in 8.
- Cable (the former Shaw network, now Rogers) is listed in 9 of 14.
- The former Shaw network is also listed as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 4 zones. Ask Rogers which technology serves your address.
These are shares of mapped zones, not of homes. They do tell you that not every part of the mapped area shows cable or fibre, so look up your own address before you choose.
Building fibre and wireless options
That coverage map lists five fibre-to-the-home owners in total. Besides Telus and the former Shaw network, Novus, a Vancouver-based company that wires apartment and condo buildings across Metro Vancouver, is listed in 2 zones. FibreStream and Urban Fiber are listed in one zone each. If you live in an apartment or condo, your building may have its own fibre provider.
The same map lists fixed wireless from Rogers in 10 zones and from OneGigabit in 8, plus satellite from Xplore. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial. Nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps and fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps. If you’re on either one, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before counting on 4K or several screens.
On cable or fibre, check the home network first: use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz, run Ethernet to the main TV if you can, and keep the router out of cabinets. In a bigger house on a slope, a mesh system can help the signal reach every floor.
