Pickering runs from the Lake Ontario shore in the south to the Uxbridge line in the north, and it had 99,186 people in the 2021 census. In between are established neighbourhoods, a planned community still being built, and rural hamlets. For streaming live TV, the part that matters is the line into your home and the Wi-Fi inside it. Here’s who owns Pickering’s wired networks, what speed streaming needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.
A Durham Region city since 2000
Pickering became a town in 1974 and a city in 2000. It’s one of eight local municipalities in the Regional Municipality of Durham, alongside Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby.
It sits immediately east of Toronto. Toronto and Markham are to the west, Ajax and Whitby to the east, Uxbridge to the north and Lake Ontario to the south. The city covers about 231 square kilometres, and its population grew 8.1% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses.
Seaton and the rural north
North Pickering looks very different from the lakeshore. Seaton is a planned community there, and it’s far from finished: as of 2022, 1,549 of its 20,989 planned units had been built.
Further out are rural communities such as Claremont, Brougham and Whitevale, and smaller ones including Greenwood and Kinsale. If you’re moving into a new build in Seaton, or you live on a rural road, ask which networks already reach your address before you choose an internet plan.
Who owns the wires in Pickering
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Pickering into 18 zones. Here’s what it shows:
- Rogers cable is mapped in 16 of the 18 zones, and Rogers fibre-to-the-home in 10.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in 17 of the 18 zones, with Bell’s older DSL in 17 as well.
- Vianet, an independent provider with its head office in Sudbury, is mapped as a fibre owner in 5 zones. telMAX, a GTA-based fibre company, is mapped in 3.
- Fixed wireless from several companies, and satellite from Xplore, are mapped in every zone.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, and the map counts network owners only. Check your own address.
Boom TV is an app you install and sign into, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Durham’s own fibre company
Durham Region has its own fibre company. Durham OneNet is a wholly owned Municipal Services Corporation of the Region, set up to extend the Region’s fibre network to underserved areas, and it works with Vianet as its partner.
In January 2025, the Region said its Project Genesis build had reached substantial completion, covering more than 1,800 rural homes, businesses, farms and municipal sites in ten communities. By December 2025, it reported that more than 2,000 homes and businesses across 14 rural communities had access to high-speed internet.
Pickering wasn’t one of the ten communities named in January 2025, and the December update didn’t list its 14. For Pickering addresses, the networks on the map above are the ones to compare.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists Pickering’s cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far more than a few streams need. Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so if you’re on DSL, test your speed before relying on 4K.
Add up your screens. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream on a tablet upstairs need about 35 Mbps between them.
Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds above. Test it on your own line with the free trial.
When a fast connection still buffers
The cause is often inside the house:
- Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or utility room, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
- Count everyone on the network. Video calls, game downloads and cloud backups share the same connection as your TV.
- Test in the evening, in the room with the TV, when everyone at home is online.
