Whitby is where Durham Region is run from: the regional government is headquartered here. The town stretches from the north shore of Lake Ontario up through Brooklin to rural communities such as Ashburn and Myrtle, and it had 138,501 people in the 2021 census. On the network-owner map, Vianet fibre also shows up in a bigger share of Whitby’s zones than in Oshawa’s next door. Your internet connection is what decides how well live TV plays, so here’s who runs Whitby’s lines, what streaming needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection first.

The seat of Durham Region

Today’s Whitby took shape in 1968, when the Town of Whitby and the Township of Whitby amalgamated. When the Regional Municipality of Durham was formed in 1974, Whitby’s boundaries didn’t change. Today it is the seat of the regional government. Whitby borders Ajax to the west, Pickering to the northwest, Scugog to the north and Oshawa to the east.

The town grew 7.9% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, from 128,377 to 138,501 people.

Brooklin and the rural north

North of central Whitby, Brooklin sits where Highways 12 and 7 meet. Its population has grown rapidly since the early 1990s with thousands of new homes, and Highway 407 opened just south of it in June 2016.

Past Brooklin, the north end of Whitby is more rural, taking in Ashburn, Myrtle and Myrtle Station. That matters for internet: a new subdivision and a farm road in the same town can be on different technology, so check what reaches your address.

Rogers, Bell and Vianet fibre

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Whitby into 15 zones:

  • Rogers is the only cable (coaxial) network owner listed, mapped in about 87% of Whitby’s zones.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 80% of zones, with Bell’s older DSL in about 93%.
  • Vianet, an Ontario provider with its main office in Sudbury, has fibre mapped in about 60% of zones.
  • Rogers fibre is mapped in about 53% of zones.
  • Smaller fibre owners, telMAX and NFTC, each appear in one zone.
  • Fixed wireless is mapped in every zone, and so is satellite.

Next door in Oshawa, that coverage map puts Vianet fibre in about 36% of zones, so Vianet fibre shows up in a bigger share of Whitby’s mapped zones. These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.

The Region’s own fibre network

In February 2022, Durham Region incorporated Durham OneNet, a municipal services corporation it wholly owns, to design, build and run a fibre network across the region. In January 2025, the Region announced that OneNet’s flagship project, Project Genesis, was substantially complete, with service provided to customers by its partner Vianet. Ashburn and Myrtle were among the communities named. By December 2025, the Region said the network had brought high-speed access to more than 2,000 homes and businesses across 14 rural communities.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

For Whitby, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, well beyond a few streams. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps and fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps, so on either of those, test your speed before relying on 4K.

Test where and when you watch: on the device in the TV room, in the evening. A 4K TV downstairs and an HD stream on a laptop upstairs need about 35 Mbps between them.

If a fast connection still buffers, check inside the home first:

  • Use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can.
  • Move the router out of the basement, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
  • Count everyone on the network. Video calls and downloads share the same connection as your TV.
