Repentigny sits where the L’Assomption River meets the St. Lawrence, just off the eastern tip of the island of Montreal. Its home internet is straightforward: Vidéotron owns the cable network, Bell runs fibre and DSL, and both are mapped in every part of the city. Here is what that means for streaming live TV, how much speed you need, and how to test Boom TV on your own line before you pay.
Repentigny and Le Gardeur, one city since 2002
Repentigny is an off-island suburb in the Lanaudière region. Along with Charlemagne, it was one of the first towns past the eastern tip of the island of Montreal, and it was the western end of the Chemin du Roy, the old road running east to Quebec City.
In 1857, part of its territory became a separate parish municipality, Saint-Paul-l’Ermite, renamed Le Gardeur in 1978. On 1 June 2002, the two merged. The city’s area grew from 29 to 69 square kilometres, and its population grew by 70%.
The 2021 census counted 86,100 residents, up 2.2% from 2016. As the next section shows, the same two main networks are mapped across the whole merged city.
Vidéotron and Bell in every zone
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Repentigny into nine zones:
- Vidéotron is the only owner of a cable (coaxial) network, and it is mapped in every zone.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL are both mapped in every zone.
- Vidéotron fibre appears in about a fifth of the zones.
On that coverage map, neither Rogers nor Cogeco owns a cable network in Repentigny. Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile. The map counts network owners, not resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over Vidéotron’s or Bell’s lines.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.
Moving from Montreal
If you’re moving off the island, the main networks don’t change. That coverage map shows the city of Montréal with the same pattern: Vidéotron as the only cable owner, with Bell fibre and DSL in every zone. Boom TV works the same on either side of the river.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to test. It is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps depending on the line, so run a speed test in the evening before you rely on it for 4K or several screens.
Add your screens together. A 4K TV in the living room and an HD stream in a bedroom need about 35 Mbps between them.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
If a fast connection still stutters, the cause is often between the router and the TV:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or a closed cabinet, or add a mesh point for upstairs rooms.
- Restart the streaming device now and then. Small sticks with limited memory run better after a fresh start.
- Test in the evening, when everyone at home is online.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Repentigny?
Yes. Vidéotron’s cable is mapped in every zone of Repentigny, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Bell fibre or DSL. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Is Rogers or Cogeco cable available in Repentigny?
Not on the network-owner map. Vidéotron is the only cable owner listed. Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile, and Cogeco doesn’t appear.
I live in the Le Gardeur sector. Is it any different?
