If you’ve moved to Rimouski from Montreal or Quebec City, the internet map will look unfamiliar. Here, the main fibre network belongs to Telus, not Bell, and the cable network belongs to Cogeco, not Vidéotron. Rimouski had 48,935 people in the 2021 census, in districts from Le Bic to Pointe-au-Père. Here’s who owns the lines, what streaming live TV needs, and how to test Boom TV on your own connection before you pay.

A city on the estuary, built from several villages

Rimouski sits on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence Estuary, at the mouth of the Rimouski River, around 300 kilometres downstream of Quebec City. It’s in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region and the Rimouski-Neigette Regional County Municipality.

Several of its 11 districts were separate communities until recently. Pointe-au-Père, Sainte-Blandine, Rimouski-Est and Sainte-Odile-sur-Rimouski were merged into Rimouski in 2002, and Le Bic followed in 2009. The city now covers about 339 square kilometres of land.

That spread matters for your internet. A house near the centre and a house in Sainte-Blandine or Le Bic can be on very different technology.

Telus fibre and Cogeco cable

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Rimouski into 30 zones. It shows:

  • Telus fibre-to-the-home in 90% of zones, and Telus DSL in about 63%.
  • Cogeco as the only cable (coaxial) owner, mapped in about two-thirds of zones.
  • Bell fibre and DSL, each in about one zone in six.
  • Cogeco fibre in a couple of zones.

Vidéotron isn’t listed as a cable or fibre owner in Rimouski. It appears only for mobile service and for high-capacity transport in one zone.

On the same coverage map, the city of Montréal shows Bell fibre and DSL in every zone, so this is a different setup.

Resellers aren’t shown, and these are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. The others need testing:

  • DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps.
  • Fixed wireless, mapped in almost every zone, is listed at 25 to 250 Mbps.
  • Satellite, mapped in every zone, is listed at 25 to 220 Mbps.

On any of those, run a speed test in the evening before you count on 4K or two screens at once.

When it buffers, look inside the house first

If a fast connection still stutters, the cause is often between the router and the TV:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band is slower and more crowded.
  • Run an Ethernet cable to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Move the router out of the basement or add a mesh point for TVs upstairs.
  • Count everything else on the network. Video calls, game downloads and backups share the same connection as your TV.

Frequently asked questions

Does Boom TV work on Telus internet in Rimouski?

Yes. Telus fibre is mapped in 90% of Rimouski’s zones, and Boom TV runs over Telus fibre or DSL the same way it runs over Cogeco cable. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

Can I get Vidéotron or Bell in Rimouski?

Vidéotron isn’t listed as a cable or fibre owner here. Bell fibre and DSL are each mapped in about one zone in six, so check your address.

I live in Le Bic or Sainte-Blandine. Will it work?

It depends on the connection at your address, not on the district. If you’re on DSL, fixed wireless or satellite, run the free trial in the evening first.

What speed do I need for 4K?

About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The trial is free and lasts 24 hours. Start the trial or see the plans.
