Brantford calls itself the Telephone City. On 10 August 1876, the inventor of the telephone made what Parks Canada calls the world’s first long-distance call, from Brantford to Paris. The lines are newer now. On the network-owner map, Rogers owns all of Brantford’s cable, and three companies own fibre. Brantford had 104,688 people in the 2021 census. Here’s how the city is wired today, what Boom TV needs, and how to test it on your own connection first.

A city separate from its county

Brantford sits on the Grand River, inside Brant County, but it is a single-tier city, politically separate from the county around it. The Six Nations of the Grand River reserve lies to the south.

The city’s boundary with the county moved on 1 January 2017. That day, an estimated 500 households switched from the County of Brant to the City of Brantford, including land north of the city between Powerline Road and Governors Road and the Tutela Heights area to the south.

In Brantford, cable means Rogers

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Brantford into 10 zones:

  • Rogers is the only coaxial cable owner listed, mapped in every zone.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in 90% of zones, and Bell’s DSL in all of them.
  • Xplore fibre is mapped in 60% of zones.
  • Rogers fibre is mapped in 40%.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address. The map counts network owners only, so a reseller may sell you service over one of these lines under its own name.

Fibre around the city, too

Xplore has also started fibre work just outside the city. In April 2022, it started construction on a fibre network for nearly 1,600 households and businesses in Brant County communities including Harrisburg, Burtch, Newport and Middleport, and it anticipated finishing in May 2023. If you’re in the county rather than the city, ask what reaches your road now.

Boom TV runs on any of these networks. It’s an app, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists Brantford’s cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and its fibre at up to 8 Gbps. Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so on DSL, test before you count on 4K. One 4K TV plus an HD stream in the kitchen needs about 35 Mbps between them.

If the picture stutters

Check the home network first:

  • Connect the TV to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Use Ethernet for the main TV when the router is close enough.
  • Get the router out of the basement or utility room, or add a mesh point.
  • Pause heavy downloads and backups while you watch.
  • Restart the streaming device now and then.
