In Burlington, the cable company is a neighbour. Burlington’s mayor said in 2020 that Cogeco’s Ontario operations are based here, and on the network-owner map, Cogeco is the only company that owns cable lines in the city. Bell fibre is mapped in most of Burlington’s zones too. Burlington had 186,948 people in the 2021 census, and for streaming live TV, the line into your home and the Wi-Fi inside it matter most. Here’s how the city is wired, what Boom TV needs, and how to test it on your own connection first.

A town in 1914, a city in 1974

Burlington sits at the western end of Lake Ontario, between Hamilton and Oakville, and it is part of Halton Region. It became a town in 1914. On 1 January 1958 it annexed most of Nelson Township and Aldershot, and it became a city in 1974.

The city grew by 2% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, while neighbouring Milton grew by 20.7%.

Cogeco’s home base

In a September 2020 statement, Burlington’s mayor said Cogeco’s head office in Burlington is its base of operations for all of Ontario, with more than 1,000 people working locally.

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Burlington into 15 zones:

  • Cogeco is the only coaxial cable owner listed, mapped in about 93% of zones.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 93% of zones, and Bell’s older DSL is listed in every zone.
  • Cogeco fibre is mapped in 80% of zones.
  • Other fibre owners appear too: Standard Broadband in about a third of zones, and Rogers fibre in about a quarter.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address. The map counts network owners only, so a reseller may sell you service over one of these lines under its own name.

If you’ve moved over from Hamilton, the cable side will look familiar: on that coverage map, Cogeco is the only cable owner listed there as well.

North of the 407

Burlington’s main urban area lies south of the Parkway Belt and Highway 407. North of it, including north Aldershot, the land is mostly farms, rural homes and conservation areas, and the Niagara Escarpment runs through the western part of the city.

If you live up there, don’t go by what friends in the south end get. Run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, and compare it with the table below. On that coverage map, Bell DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so on DSL, test before you count on 4K.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists Burlington’s cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and its fibre at up to 8 Gbps, well above a few streams. A 4K TV in the living room plus an HD stream on a laptop needs about 35 Mbps between them.

If a fast plan still stutters, check the home network before you call your provider:

  • Switch the TV to 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz.
  • Run an Ethernet cable to the main TV if you can.
  • Keep the router out of the basement and out of cabinets, or add a mesh point near the TV.
  • Count what else is running. Video calls, game downloads and cloud backups all share the line.

Getting set up in Burlington

  1. Start the free 24-hour trial. Try it in the evening, on the TV you actually watch.
  2. Install the app on your streaming stick, TV box, smart TV, phone, tablet or computer, and sign in with the details sent by email.
  3. Connect over 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and watch for a full evening. If it plays cleanly, choose a plan on the plans page.

There’s no technician visit and nothing installed on the line.
