Milton has grown fast. It went from 110,128 people in 2016 to 132,979 in the 2021 census, a jump of 20.7%. It’s also wired unusually: two different companies own cable lines here, and several own fibre. For live TV over the internet, that means your street can have different options from the next subdivision over. Here’s how Milton is wired, what Boom TV needs, and how to try it on your own connection first.

A town since 1857, and much bigger since 1974

Milton is still a town, and it is part of the Regional Municipality of Halton. It was incorporated in 1857. In 1974 it added all of Nassagaweya Township, including the village of Campbellville, plus parts of the old Esquesing, Trafalgar and Nelson townships.

That’s why Milton today is two places in one. Highway 401 cuts through the town, with the main residential and commercial areas to the south and mostly rural and industrial land to the north. Milton also sits on the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Two cable companies in one town

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Milton into 25 zones. Cable is where Milton stands out:

  • Cogeco cable is mapped in 64% of zones.
  • Rogers cable is mapped in 28% of zones.

So a move across town can mean a different cable company, and a friend’s plan may not be available on your street. These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.

Fibre: Bell, Cogeco and a smaller builder

Fibre-to-the-home shows up in 96% of Milton’s zones on that coverage map:

  • Bell fibre in 64% of zones, and Bell’s DSL in 92%.
  • Cogeco fibre in 60%.
  • Standard Broadband in 48%.
  • Rogers fibre in 12%, and CIK Telecom in a small share.

On the rural side, in May 2021, the federal government announced funding for Standard Broadband to bring fibre-to-the-home to 324 underserved households in Haltonville and Moffat, in the old Nassagaweya area. The announcement didn’t give a completion date, so if you’re out that way, ask whether it reaches your road yet.

North of the 401

If you’re on a rural road north of the highway, your connection may not match what town households get. That coverage map lists Bell DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps. On DSL, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before you count on 4K.

Boom TV works the same on every one of these networks. It’s an app, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists cable in Milton at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. Add up your screens: two HD streams and one 4K stream need about 45 Mbps together.

If a fast connection still buffers, start with the home network:

  • Put the TV on 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 2.4 GHz.
  • Wire the main TV with Ethernet when you can.
  • Add a mesh point if the router is at the far end of a long, newer house.
  • Pause big downloads and backups while you watch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milton on Cogeco or Rogers?

Both. On the network-owner map, Cogeco cable covers most of Milton’s zones and Rogers cable covers about a quarter. Boom TV works the same on either.

Does Boom TV work on Bell fibre in Milton?

Yes. Boom TV runs over your existing internet connection, whether it’s Bell, Cogeco, Rogers or a smaller fibre company. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

I live near Campbellville. Will it work?

It works wherever your home connection keeps up. Aim for about 10 Mbps per HD stream or 25 Mbps per 4K stream, and test with the free trial first.

What do I need for 4K?

About 25 Mbps per 4K stream, plus a TV or device that supports 4K.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. It lasts 24 hours and is free. Start the trial or see the plans.
