Chilliwack is a city with a lot of farmland. About two-thirds of its land is in the Agricultural Land Reserve, and the 2021 census counted 93,203 people, up 11.2% in five years. That mix of growing suburbs and open farmland is worth knowing when you compare internet options. Here’s who runs Chilliwack’s lines, what live TV streaming needs, and how to try Boom TV on your own connection first.
A Fraser Valley city, north side and south side
Chilliwack sits in the Fraser Valley, about 100 km east of the City of Vancouver, and the Fraser Valley Regional District has its offices downtown. Today’s city took shape in 1980, when the old City and Township of Chilliwack amalgamated. It took the name City of Chilliwack in 1999.
The city has two sides. The north side runs from the Trans-Canada Highway to the Fraser River. The south side includes Sardis, its urban core, along with Vedder Crossing, Garrison Crossing and Yarrow. Communities like Promontory, Greendale, Ryder Lake, Rosedale and Fairfield Island round it out. With so much farmland between them, a house on a rural road and a new townhouse in Sardis may not have the same internet options.
Who owns the wires in Chilliwack
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Chilliwack into 23 zones.
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023. If you still see the Shaw name, it’s the same cable network, now owned by Rogers. That coverage map lists Rogers’ cable network in 21 of the 23 zones. Rogers’ Chilliwack page describes fibre to the neighbourhood with coaxial cable into the home. The coverage map lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in only 2 zones.
- Telus. That coverage map lists Telus DSL in 21 of the 23 zones, and Telus fibre-to-the-home in 17.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address with each provider.
Fixed wireless fills in
That coverage map also lists six fixed-wireless network owners in Chilliwack, two of them in every zone, with speeds listed at 25 to 250 Mbps. If your home is on fixed wireless rather than a wired line, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, and compare it with the table below.
Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
For Chilliwack, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, a wide range. On DSL or fixed wireless, test before counting on 4K or several screens. A 4K TV and an HD tablet stream need about 35 Mbps between them.
When a fast plan still buffers
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router up and into the open. Basements and cabinets cost signal.
- Add a mesh point if the TV is on a different floor.
- Count everyone on the network. Video calls and downloads share the same connection as your TV.
