Delta isn’t one town. It’s three: North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen, each geographically separate, with farmland and Burns Bog in between. The 2021 census counted 108,455 people across the city. Delta’s network map also lists two different cable companies, not one. Here’s who owns the lines in Delta, and what Boom TV needs to run well on your connection.
Three communities, one city
Delta was incorporated as a district municipality in 1879 and took the name City of Delta in 2017. Its three communities are home to most of its people:
- North Delta, the largest, with 51,623 people, bordered by Burns Bog and Surrey.
- Ladner, a 19th-century fishing village that has grown into a suburb, with 21,112.
- Tsawwassen, in the southwest, with 20,933.
Burns Bog alone covers about 40 km² of wetland, and Agricultural Land Reserve rules keep most of Delta’s farmland in farming. In practice, that means homes in Delta sit in separate clusters, and your options in Tsawwassen may not be the same as a friend’s in North Delta.
Two cable companies, not one
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Delta into 22 zones.
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023. That coverage map lists Rogers’ cable network in 15 of the 22 zones. Rogers’ Delta page describes fibre to the neighbourhood with coaxial cable into the home. The coverage map lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 7 zones. So ask Rogers which technology serves your address.
- Eastlink. That coverage map also lists Eastlink as a cable network owner in 14 of the 22 zones.
- Telus. That coverage map lists Telus fibre-to-the-home in 17 of the 22 zones, and Telus DSL in 16.
The map doesn’t say which cable company serves which community, so check your own address with both. These are shares of mapped zones, not homes.
Smaller fibre owners
That coverage map lists six fibre-to-the-home owners in Delta. Besides Telus and the former Shaw network, four smaller companies, including Novus, which wires apartment and condo buildings in Metro Vancouver, each appear in one or two zones. If your building was wired by one of them, you may have an extra choice.
Boom TV runs on any of these networks. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
For Delta, that coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps, so on DSL, test before counting on 4K or several screens. A 4K TV and an HD tablet stream need about 35 Mbps between them.
When a fast plan still buffers
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
- Count everyone on the network. Video calls, downloads and backups share the same connection.
- Test in the evening, in the room with the TV.
Getting set up in Delta
- Start the free 24-hour trial. Test it in the evening, on the TV you actually use.
- Install the app on a streaming stick, TV box, smart TV, phone, tablet or computer, and sign in with the details sent by email.
- Connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and watch a full evening. If it plays cleanly, choose a plan on the plans page.
No technician, no new wiring and nothing to return.
