Richmond, BC is a city built on islands. It covers Sea Island, most of Lulu Island and 12 smaller islands in the delta of the Fraser River, and the airport sits on Sea Island. It’s also a farming city: about 39% of Richmond’s land is in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Both are worth knowing before you choose a connection. The 2021 census counted 209,937 Richmond residents. Here is how the city’s connections break down, and what Boom TV needs to run well on yours.
An island city with a lot of farmland
Richmond was first incorporated in 1879 and became a city in 1990. Much of its soil comes from Fraser River deposits, and the City notes that the groundwater table is high. According to the City, roughly 4,993 hectares, or 39% of Richmond, lies within the Agricultural Land Reserve, and that figure doesn’t count reserve land on Sea Island.
That mix matters for streaming. A condo near the city centre and a house on a farm road are both in Richmond, but they may not have the same wired options. So check what reaches your own address rather than going by the city as a whole.
Who owns the wires in Richmond
Two large networks serve the city:
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, and says its own brand will become more prevalent over time. If your bill or modem still says Shaw, it’s the same network. Rogers’ Richmond page describes fibre to the neighbourhood with coaxial cable into the home. It says fibre-to-the-home plans appear at an address once they become available there.
- Telus, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL. For customers outside its fibre communities, Telus offers DSL over copper.
Smaller fibre companies also serve some buildings, including Novus, which wires apartment and condo buildings in Metro Vancouver. Resellers sell plans over the big networks under their own names.
Boom TV runs over any of them. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.
What the network map shows: 13 of 16 zones
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings splits Richmond into 16 zones. Unlike in Vancouver or Burnaby, the two big wired networks don’t show up in every one:
- Cable (the former Shaw network, now Rogers) is listed in 13 of 16 zones.
- Telus fibre and Telus DSL are each listed in 13 of 16.
- The former Shaw network is also listed as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 10 of 16 zones. Rogers’ own page describes the network differently, so ask Rogers which technology serves your address.
- Fixed wireless is listed more widely: Rogers in all 16 zones and Telus in 14.
These are shares of mapped zones, not of homes. They do tell you that a Richmond address can’t be assumed to have cable or fibre. If you’re out among the farms, look up your address with the providers, then test what you actually get.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
If you’re on DSL or fixed wireless, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before counting on 4K. Clearing about 10 Mbps per screen makes HD realistic. On cable or fibre, fix the home network first:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. It’s faster and less crowded, especially in condo buildings.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if the router is close enough.
- Keep the router central and off the floor. Basements, cabinets and the back of the TV all cost signal.

No installer, no new wiring, and nothing to return.
