Granby’s internet map is simpler than its history. Vidéotron owns the only cable network, Bell fibre and DSL are mapped across the city, and two more fibre networks reach parts of it, including one owned by a telecom co-operative. Here is who runs the lines in Granby, what live TV needs from your connection, and how to test Boom TV at home before you pay.

A city and its township, together since 2007

Granby is a town in the Estrie region and the administrative centre of La Haute-Yamaska regional county municipality. Until 2007 there were two Granbys: the city and the surrounding Township of Granby. On 28 May 2006, both voted on a merger. It passed with 56% support in the city and 81% in the township, and the two became one municipality on 1 January 2007.

That’s why Granby covers about 153 square kilometres. The built-up area is concentrated near the centre, with farmland and lower-density development around it, and the North Yamaska River flows through Lac Boivin on its way through the city. The 2021 census counted 69,025 residents, up 4.2% from 2016.

Vidéotron is the only cable network

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Granby into 12 zones:

  • Vidéotron is the only owner of a cable (coaxial) network, and it is mapped in every zone.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home and DSL are both mapped in every zone.
  • Vidéotron fibre is mapped in about 58% of zones.
  • Cooptel fibre is mapped in a third of zones.

Cogeco doesn’t appear on that coverage map for Granby, and Rogers appears only for fixed wireless and mobile. The map counts network owners, not resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over one of these lines.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.

A co-op fibre network

Cooptel is a telecommunications co-operative based in Valcourt, and internet is among the services it offers its members. On that coverage map, its fibre reaches about a third of Granby’s zones.

The same map also lists fixed wireless in every zone, from seven owners, at 25 to 250 Mbps, plus satellite. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial.

Whichever line you have, Boom TV is an app. Nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps depending on the line, so on DSL, run a speed test in the evening before you rely on it for 4K or several screens.

When it buffers, look inside the house first

If the connection is fast on paper but the picture stutters, the cause is often inside the home:

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
  • Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
  • Move the router out of the basement, or add a mesh point for TVs on another floor.
  • Count everyone on the network. Video calls, game downloads and backups share the same connection as your TV.
  • Test in the evening, when the whole household is online.
