Lac-Brome is seven communities around one lake, and its internet map is more patchwork than a city’s. Two different cable companies serve different parts of town, fibre covers much of it, and fixed wireless is mapped in every zone. Here is who runs the lines around Brome Lake, what live TV needs from your connection, and how to test Boom TV on your own line before you pay.

Seven communities, one town since 1971

The Town of Brome Lake (Lac-Brome) was formed in 1971 by merging Bondville, East Hill, Foster, Fulford, Iron Hill, Knowlton and West Brome. The lake itself covers about 15 square kilometres and is the source of the Yamaska River. The separate Village of Brome is surrounded on three sides by the town.

The 2021 census counted 5,923 residents over about 207 square kilometres of land. It also counted 3,683 private dwellings, of which 2,828 were occupied by their usual residents. In other words, nearly a quarter weren’t occupied by usual residents on census day.

Two cable companies, and not everywhere

An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Lac-Brome into 18 zones:

  • Cogeco cable is mapped in about 44% of zones, and Vidéotron cable in about 39%. Cable of any kind is mapped in about 78% of zones, so some zones have none.
  • Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 89% of zones, and Bell DSL in every zone.
  • Vidéotron and Cogeco fibre each appear in a smaller share.
  • Fixed wireless is mapped in every zone, from Xplore, Rogers and Bell, plus two smaller owners, and satellite is mapped in every zone too.

These are shares of mapped zones, not homes. With two cable owners splitting the map, check your own address rather than going by your neighbour’s.

At the cottage, test the line you have

If Lac-Brome is your second home, the connection there may not match the one in the city. That coverage map lists fixed wireless at 25 to 250 Mbps, satellite at 25 to 220 Mbps and DSL at 5 to 100 Mbps, all wide ranges. Run the free trial at the cottage itself, in the evening, before counting on 4K.

Boom TV is an app, so nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.

How much speed you actually need

Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:

What you’re watching What you need
4K about 25 Mbps
Full HD (1080p) about 10 Mbps
More than one screen add each stream together

Cable is listed at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. On fixed wireless, satellite or DSL, test first. If it buffers, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or plug the main TV in with Ethernet, which takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
