Kamloops is a big city to wire. The 2021 census counted 97,902 people spread over almost 300 square kilometres, at the meeting of the North and South Thompson rivers. On the network map, no single wired network is listed in every zone. Depending on where you live, your home might be on fibre, cable, DSL or fixed wireless. Here’s how Kamloops is connected, and how to check that Boom TV runs well on your line before you pay.
A river city with a lot of ground
Kamloops sits at the confluence of the North and South Thompson rivers, in the Thompson–Nicola Regional District. It was incorporated in 1893 and grew 8.4% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses. In 1973 it amalgamated with the former Town of Valleyview.
Its neighbourhoods include Aberdeen, Sahali, Brocklehurst, Westsyde, Dallas, Barnhartvale and Juniper Ridge, spread over a land area of about 298 km². On the network map below, no single wired network is listed in every zone.
Who owns the wires in Kamloops
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Kamloops into 26 zones.
- Telus. That coverage map lists Telus fibre-to-the-home in 19 of the 26 zones, and Telus DSL in 18. Telus’s Kamloops page notes that its fibre is not available in all areas, and that it offers DSL to customers outside its fibre communities.
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023. If you still see the Shaw name, it’s the same cable network, now owned by Rogers. That coverage map lists Rogers’ cable network in 16 of the 26 zones. Rogers’ Kamloops page describes fibre to the neighbourhood with coaxial cable into the home. The coverage map lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 3 zones.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address with both.
Fixed wireless and satellite on the map too
Wired networks aren’t the only option. That coverage map lists six fixed-wireless network owners in Kamloops, including Telus in every zone and Rogers in most, with speeds listed at 25 to 250 Mbps. Satellite service from Xplore is mapped in every zone, at 25 to 220 Mbps.
Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account. If you’re on fixed wireless or satellite, the free trial is the simplest way to find out how it plays on your own connection.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far more than a few streams need. DSL is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps. On DSL, fixed wireless or satellite, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before counting on 4K or several screens.
When a fast plan still buffers
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router up and out of the basement or cabinet.
- Count everyone on the network. Video calls and downloads share the same connection as your TV.
- Restart the streaming device now and then. Small sticks with limited memory run better after a fresh start.
