Sherbrooke’s internet map has several local names on it. Vidéotron’s cable is mapped in almost every zone of the network-owner map, but Cogeco also owns cable here, a smaller company with an address in Cookshire-Eaton has cable in a few zones, and a telecom co-operative that began in Valcourt runs fibre in about three zones in ten. Here is who owns the lines in Sherbrooke, what Boom TV needs to play well, and how to test it on your own connection before you pay.
Two rivers, eight towns, four boroughs
Sherbrooke sits at the meeting of the Saint-François and Magog rivers, in the heart of the Eastern Townships, in the Estrie region. On 1 January 2002 it absorbed Ascot, Bromptonville, Deauville, Fleurimont, Lennoxville, Rock Forest and Saint-Élie-d’Orford, along with part of Stoke.
The city now has four boroughs: Brompton–Rock Forest–Saint-Élie–Deauville, Fleurimont, Lennoxville and Les Nations. The 2021 census counted 172,950 residents, up 7.2% from 161,323 in 2016.
Who owns the wires in Sherbrooke
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits Sherbrooke into 26 zones. It shows:
- Cable (coaxial): Vidéotron in almost every zone, Cogeco in a little under four zones in ten, and Transvision Cookshire in about one zone in nine.
- Fibre-to-the-home: Bell in about nine zones in ten, Cogeco in a little under half, CoopTel in about three in ten, and Vidéotron in two zones.
- DSL: Bell in almost every zone.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes. Resellers are left out, so the name on your bill may not be the company that owns the wire. Several of these networks overlap, so check what serves your own address.
A co-op and a small local company
Two of the names on Sherbrooke’s map are smaller Quebec companies.
CoopTel is a telecommunications co-op. It started in 1944 as a telephone co-operative in Valcourt, expanded to Sherbrooke in 2007, and said in 2022 that it served more than 112 municipalities. On that coverage map, its fibre reaches about three Sherbrooke zones in ten.
Transvision Cookshire is a smaller company with its address in Cookshire-Eaton. The CRTC registered it in 2016 to offer local phone service in the Sherbrooke, East Angus and Cookshire exchanges, and it has cable mapped in three of Sherbrooke’s zones.
If your internet comes from one of them, Boom TV works the same. It’s an app on your TV device, so nothing is installed on the line and nothing changes on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
The network data lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. Bell’s DSL is listed at anywhere from 5 to 100 Mbps depending on the line, so on DSL, run an evening speed test before you rely on 4K or two TVs at once.
When it buffers, look inside the house first
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. In apartment buildings, the 2.4 GHz band is crowded with neighbours’ networks.
- Run an Ethernet cable to the main TV if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router out of the basement or cabinet. Floors and walls between it and the TV cost signal.
- Count everything else on the network. Video calls, game downloads and backups share the same connection as your TV.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Sherbrooke?
Yes. Vidéotron cable is mapped in almost every zone of the city, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Cogeco or Bell. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
My internet comes from CoopTel. Will it work?
Yes. Boom TV only needs a steady internet connection, so the company that owns the line makes no difference. Check your evening speed against the table above.
I live in Lennoxville (or Rock Forest, or Fleurimont). Is anything different?
Those were separate municipalities before 2002 and are now part of Sherbrooke. Boom TV works the same across the city. What matters is the technology wired to your home.
What speed do I need for 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. The trial is free and lasts 24 hours. Start the trial or see the plans.
