White Rock is small: about 5.2 square kilometres on Semiahmoo Bay, with Surrey wrapped around it on three sides. The 2021 census counted 21,939 people here, up about 10% in five years. For streaming live TV, being small has an upside. The wired networks are mapped across the whole city, so the question is less about which network reaches you and more about the speed that reaches your TV. Here’s how it works, and what Boom TV needs to run well on your connection.
A city of its own since 1957
White Rock was incorporated in 1957, after residents felt isolated from what was then the District of Surrey. The city takes its name from a large white boulder on its beach. To the south lies Semiahmoo Bay, with the Canada–US border running through the water.
Who owns the wires in White Rock
Two big networks serve the city:
- Rogers, formerly Shaw. Rogers completed its purchase of Shaw on 3 April 2023, so the former Shaw network is now owned by Rogers.
- Telus, with fibre-to-the-home and DSL.
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings splits White Rock into four zones. It lists the cable network, Telus fibre and Telus DSL in all four. It also lists the former Shaw network as a fibre-to-the-home owner in 2 of the 4, so ask Rogers which technology serves your address.
That coverage map lists no smaller fibre owners in White Rock. On that map, Telus and the cable network are the only wired network owners.
Boom TV runs over any of them. Nothing is installed on the line, and Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists Telus DSL in White Rock at 5 to 100 Mbps, a wide range. If your address is on DSL, run a speed test in the evening, in the room with the TV, before counting on 4K or several screens at once.
When a fast plan still buffers
If the plan is fast but the picture still stutters, look between the router and the TV:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz. It’s faster and less crowded, especially in apartment buildings.
- Run Ethernet to the main TV if the router is close enough.
- Move the router up and into the open. Cabinets, basements and the back of the TV all cost signal.
- Consider a mesh system if the TV is a floor or several walls away from the router.
