Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu sits on both banks of the Richelieu River, about 40 km southeast of Montreal. Vidéotron owns most of the cable network, but Cogeco cable shows up in part of the city, and several fibre companies have built here too. Here is who owns the lines across the city’s five sectors, what Boom TV needs to play well, and how to test it on your own connection before you pay.
Five towns that chose to merge
Today’s city dates from 2001, when Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu merged with Saint-Luc, Iberville, Saint-Athanase and L’Acadie. Unlike many Quebec mergers, this one was requested by the five municipalities themselves, a year before the province imposed mergers elsewhere. The city still uses those five names for its sectors, and it is the seat of the Le Haut-Richelieu regional county municipality.
The 2021 census counted 97,873 residents, up 2.9% from 2016. The city straddles the river, and each of its five sectors has its own neighbourhoods, from Vieux-Saint-Jean to Vieux-Iberville. Which network reaches you can differ from one part of the city to the next.
Who owns the wires in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
An independent coverage map built from CRTC network-owner filings (the CRTC is Canada’s telecom regulator) splits the city into 19 zones:
- Vidéotron cable is mapped in about 84% of zones.
- Cogeco cable is mapped in about 16% of zones. Cable of any kind is mapped in about 90% of zones, so not every zone has it.
- Bell fibre-to-the-home is mapped in about 95% of zones, and Bell DSL in every zone.
- IHR Telecom, a smaller company, owns fibre mapped in about 37% of zones. Cogeco and Vidéotron fibre each appear in a smaller share.
Rogers appears on that coverage map only for fixed wireless and mobile, not for a wired network. The map counts network owners, not resellers, so the company on your bill may be selling service over one of these lines.
These are shares of mapped zones, not homes, so check your own address.
Fixed wireless and satellite on the map too
That coverage map also lists fixed wireless networks in every zone, from eight different owners, at 25 to 250 Mbps, and satellite at 25 to 220 Mbps. Boom TV works on any home connection that meets the speeds below. Test it on your own line with the free trial.
Whichever network you’re on, Boom TV is an app. Nothing is installed on the line. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
How much speed you actually need
Boom TV’s recommended speeds, per stream:
| What you’re watching | What you need |
|---|---|
| 4K | about 25 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | about 10 Mbps |
| More than one screen | add each stream together |
That coverage map lists cable at up to 1.5 Gbps and fibre at up to 8 Gbps, far above these figures. DSL is the one to check: it is listed at 5 to 100 Mbps depending on the line, so test it in the evening before relying on it for 4K or several screens.
If the speed test looks fine but the picture still stutters, the cause is often inside the house:
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, not 2.4 GHz.
- Plug the main TV in with Ethernet if you can. A wired connection takes Wi-Fi out of the picture.
- Move the router off the floor and out of the basement, or add a mesh point for upstairs TVs.
- Count everyone online. Video calls and downloads share the same connection as your TV.

Frequently asked questions
Does Boom TV work on Vidéotron in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu?
Yes. Vidéotron cable is mapped in most of the city’s zones, and Boom TV runs over it the same way it runs over Cogeco, Bell or IHR Telecom. Boom TV doesn’t change anything on your internet account.
Why does my neighbour have a different cable company?
On the network-owner map, Vidéotron cable covers about 84% of zones and Cogeco about 16%. Which one reaches you depends on your address, not on your sector’s name.
I live in Iberville. Is anything different?
Iberville has been one of the city’s five sectors since the 2001 merger. Which network reaches you depends on your address, not your sector, so check what serves your street.

What speed do I need for 4K?
About 25 Mbps per 4K stream and about 10 Mbps per HD stream. Add them together for each screen in use at the same time.
